Zimbabwe: health crisis looms in Beitbridge

-

IN BEITBRIDGE, Zimbabwe, raw sewage spilling from toilets into houses and from manholes in the border town’s Mashakada area is a health hazard.

The situation is a threat to the town’s more than 60 000 people. Municipality officials have not attended to the sewerage-pipe bursts, despite reports being made. They told people to use the bush as toilets.

Damaged or blocked plumbing, septic tank damage and power outages are prevalent at pumping stations. The storm drains carry storm run-off from streets, parking lots and roofs through pipes and ditches, into streams.
