Function of health office needs clarification
THE Office of Health Standards Compliance was established in 2008 to inspect health institutions to ensure they comply with national health standards.
According to inspections conducted in the financial year 2016/2017, 696 health establishments were inspected, and only five found to be compliant.
Why was there a need for this office when inspections of health institutions had always been one of the functions of the SA Nursing Council (SANC), among many others?
What else do the staff of this office do when not busy with inspections?
The office did nothing about a complaint I lodged with it regarding the suffering of chronically ill patients in Rustenburg in 2017. Patients still go for months without their medication.
