DRC rains, landslides kill 9, injure 20

-

BUKAVU: At least nine people were killed and 20 injured in landslides triggered by heavy rains in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said yesterday.

The deadly incident in the village of Murambi in South Kivu province came after “several rivers burst their banks”, said local official Pascal Cinama. Two men, three women and four children died, and 50 houses were destroyed, he said.

Heavy rain has caused several such incidents in the east of the DRC in recent weeks. Sixteen people died on November 22 in Kamituga, also in South Kivu, when floodwaters swept away a number of houses.
