Fundraising campaign to help poor students takes to the streets

GRADUATES yet again took up the cause and graced various traffic intersections yesterday morning to raise funds for disadvantaged prospective students admitted at institutions of higher learning.

The annual Thusangwanageno initiative kicked off at 5am with groups of graduates taking part across the country.

Thusangwanageno founder Dr John Molepo led the Gauteng team at the intersection of Eskia Mphahlele Drive and Mabopane Highway (R80).

Motorists donated any amount they could, including coins, while others promised to return with money. The campaign is set to continue until the end of January when most prospective students will be sorting out their tertiary registration matters.

Molepo, a senior lecturer in Public Administration at the University of Mpumalanga, called upon businesses, government and non-profit organisations to also extend a helping hand and make donations.

He said they had already assisted more than 700 students since the initiative was founded five years ago.

He said: “The initiative is targeting to assist 900 students in 2023. Students will also be assisted with stationery that will be needed for them to start with the academic journey.

“Regular workshops will be provided to ensure that students are supported and continuously encouraged in their studies to stay motivated and to ultimately ensure success.

“In 2022, the initiative also covered books of learners, refurbished schools and donated mini-libraries in various schools. Through the years, the initiative also assisted more than 200 young people with learner and driver licences.

“Some students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford to pay registration and tuition fees. Some students are still owing universities huge amounts of money.

“We are also appealing to individuals and companies to donate to the initiative or adopt students. We are also calling for volunteers to come and be part of this initiative.”
