Awful news that the great Pelé has been moved to end-of-life palliative care after he stopped responding to chemotherapy. The only footballer in history to win 3 World Cups, and an icon of the game at the level of Muhammad Ali in boxing. So sad.

@bbaale_david

In case Pele dies during World Cup, he would have died between what he loved most. From dust we came.

@andrewoa33

When it comes to arguments about the greatest players in World Cup history, there is no argument. Six goals in three games to win in 1958 was just the start.

@omid9

Pele battling cancer. Global community giving him a high dose of love to get him through a particularly difficult time in hospital right now.

You have no idea the effect the legend had on this Canadian boy’s life. I first saw the 19 year old in his third year as a pro on our small black and white TV in 1960. I was gobsmacked to say the least. I knew special when I saw it, even as a 6 year old. Enjoy the World Cup. Brasil!

@dukesy12

Pele is the player who made me fall in love with the game. Watching him in the 70 World Cup with all its colour and sunshine is something I will never forget. That Brazil team was the greatest I have ever seen. #Prayforpele

Please stay alive Pelé, until after the World Cup at least. I am not Brazilian, but it would mean so much to him if they won it.

@Danielregha

This is extremely heartbreaking. The doctors treat but God heals. Praying for Pele during this very difficult time, may the heavens comfort and continue to strengthen him. Wishing his loved ones divine peace. The world is praying for them all.

@stick_dispenser

I am not saying I know too much but why do I feel like he is waiting to see Messi lift this cup and he will rest well, knowing a worthy king took over the throne – but that is just me.

My man Pele outwits death and dribbled pass life-threatening diseases. Get well soon Pele.
