STREET RENAMING

Renaming streets is a waste of taxpayers’ money. Extra money for corrupt politicians. The roads are in horrible condition due to potholes and poor road markings. Too many lame excuses for name changes. Those in top positions always tamper with something that is in order. | RAJ

Before the municipality even thinks of renaming a road, they need to sort out many issues like electricity, water and sanitation. Who is getting paid for this tender? One of the municipality’s family members again? It is corruption. The municipality must stop sitting around and look at the people who are suffering. They must stop looking at what is going into their pockets. There are more serious issues. Sort that out and then think of renaming a street. | HASSAN AMOD ASHRAFEE

The renaming of Peak Street is absolutely ridiculous at this moment in time. Eskom needs billions of rand to keep the lights on and is struggling. These decision-makers approve such laws, amendments or bills just so that they can receive kickbacks from the over-inflated pricing on the irregularly awarded tenders. Now renaming streets means changing names on everything from websites to billboards to street signs to telephone directories. Company logos, business cards, invoice books etc also change. Now is this not going to cost millions of rand? Those same millions should be used to fix the roads, the sinkholes, potholes and street lights. | RICHIE RICH

CRIME

The police need to protect themselves by ensuring that they fire back to kill. Do not give them bail please. The death sentence must also be reinstated. Enough is enough. | HERMAN LESEKA

When politicians arrive at an event – that could have been avoided if there was proper policing – like when SA rapper AKA was gunned down, they should be chased away. When policing, service deliveryrelated protests take place, the blame needs to be at the feet of our police. Bheki Cele should be given the boot. We give too much respect to a failed government. | ASH

EDUCATION

I feel heartbroken for these kids. They are here to study. UKZN has funds and needs to use them properly to create a decent living space for the students. My son is a fifth-year medical student and had to move to a private residence in Pietermaritzburg. His previous residence was in bad condition as his room was infested with spiders and cockroaches. He complained many times, but never got help. | SHAIKSHANTAL

ECONOMY

The time for intellectuals like Dr Vusi Shongwe and his principal the ANC is over. The common denominator in all our problems as a country is the ANC and no amount of apportioning responsibility for our misfortune and blame shifting can undo that reality. | MTUNGWA KA MBULAZI KHUMALO

LOAD SHEDDING

What can we say? We all saw it coming. It seems all power stations talk to each other when it comes to breaking (down) and when to heal themselves. Our president is sitting with folded hands waiting. He does not seem interested in Eskom and load shedding. While the poor and old sit in the dark, they all have lights. It is disgraceful. | SUSAN MILLER

The wood along the beach can surely be dumped in an allocated area where individuals use firewood, but cannot afford to buy it. The municipality can engage with the various councillors in the areas where people use firewood as they have no electricity. I live in Phoenix in an area that borders Bhambayi and we see people come into Phoenix and cut trees in order to use as firewood. Will this not be a case of killing two birds with one stone? | FARAH

All coal mined on South African soil should be first consumed by Eskom and a private consortium supplying energy to the state. | ASHWIN HARICHUND
