CANBERRA: Antarc­tica has lost about three tril­lion tonnes of ice since 1992 as the rate of the melt ac­cel­er­ated three­fold in the past five years, ac­cord­ing to a study.

The amount of ice melt has in­creased the global sealevel rise by 7.6 mil­lime­tres since 1992, with about 3mm oc­cur­ring since 2012.

Antarc­tica’s ice sheets – a key indi­ca­tor of cli­mate change – have enough wa­ter to raise the sea level by 58m.
