Cornelius accused found guilty
HANNAH Cornelius’s friend who survived the hijacking that led to her murder said he was relieved after their attackers were convicted yesterday.
Cheslin Marsh, 22, attended judgment proceedings at the Western Cape High Court wearing a T-shirt bearing a photo of his dead friend.
Judge Rosheni Allie found three of the four men on trial guilty of the rape and murder of Cornelius, saying the State had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons and Eben van Niekerk were guilty of all 10 charges they faced, including the attempted murder of Marsh and the kidnapping of Marsh, Cornelius and Mimi October. They were also convicted of four charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Fourth accused Nashville Julius was convicted of two charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two charges of kidnapping.
Cornelius, 21, and Marsh were hijacked in Stellenbosch on May 27 last year. Cornelius was found dead a few hours later close to a wine farm.
The matter continues today.
