Turn your smartphone into a productivity tool with the innovative Smarter Time app

Smartphones can either be a colossal waste of time – we’re looking at you, Candy Crush – or they can make it easier to meet work and personal commitments and manage a modern, hectic lifestyle without anxiety. Smarter Time, now available on Android and with a beta iOS version in the works, aims to help you manage your time and organise your life more efficiently. As you log your time manually and the app tracks your activity automatically to fill in blanks in your day – basing its work on your previous habits and on data from your phone’s sensors – it begins to produce reports on everything from how you spend your day to which apps are wasting most of your time. You can export your data any time, save it online or keep it tucked away on your phone, well away from pesky Facebook servers.

Once you’ve been sufficiently horrified at the amount of time you’re wasting, you’ll want to change your daily activity balance and set customised goals that Smarter Time will help you achieve. We found the basic free version more than powerful enough to coerce us into binning our post-lunch daydreaming habit, but if you’re after additional features like more detailed reports and additional data-export options, you can sign up for Plus accounts, which will set you back $3-$10 each month.
