Uncommon talent

Destiny Man - - SPORTS ROUND-UP -

The Commonwealth Games isn’t usually on the average sports fan’s must-watch list, what with its colonial undertones, but Team SA were nevertheless impressive in finishing fifth on the overall table, bagging 37 medals on Australia’s Gold Coast. As expected, Caster Semenya and Chad le Clos did the business in Oz, but it was heartening to see new names on the podiums. A resurgent Akani Simbine finally took gold on the world stage, beating compatriot Henricho Bruintjies and much-touted Jamaican Yohan Blake in the 100m, while SA’s latest swimming sensation, 20-year-old Tatjana Schoenmaker, stormed to victory in both the 50m and 200m breaststroke finals in record-breaking fashion.

If only our athletes’ commitment were matched by the organisers of the biannual event: the bland closing ceremony drew criticism, with some wags describing it as “a karaoke session in a dimly lit bar”.
