RUE MORAIS (34)

Destiny Man - - ED’S NOTE -

CFO: Dis-Chem, Johannesburg At just 28 years of age, Morais became CFO at Dis-Chem and since then, he’s played a crucial role in its phenomenal growth. The pharmaceutical retail brand expanded from 35 to 140 stores since he first joined in 2009, extending beyond SA into Namibia. Morais and his team have their sights set on moving further into SADC countries and reaching 200 outlets soon. With that level of ambition, it’s no wonder that he walked away with three accolades at this year’s CFO of the Year Awards, including Young CFO of the Year, Strategy Execution and Finance & Technology. Morais says he’s proudest of the Strategy Execution Award because the bigger-picture task of generating long-term returns for the company most appeals to him, as he demonstrated with the key role he played in the listing of Dis-Chem on the JSE in 2016. “I’m an operational shareholder of the group and, as such, I see myself as completely aligned with DisChem,” he says. “As it stands, my role encompasses more than just finance: I involve myself in all aspects of the business. I enjoy the strategic and operational challenges and believe they’ll be a bigger part of my portfolio going forward,” he says.
