FREDDY SONAKILE (28)
Legal Advisor: North West Provincial Legislature, Mmabatho
Sonakile’s job involves ensuring that all dealings – lawmaking, public participation and oversight of the executive – are carried out within the ambit of the law. In addition, he drafts opinions on different legal matters, advising portfolio committees and analysing, as well as drafting legislation.
“Members of the legislature are politicians and most of them don’t have a legal background. They need a legal professional to help them so that everything’s done correctly,” says Sonakile.
A graduate of North West University, he’s proudest of the key role he played in drafting the province’s forward-thinking conservation laws, including the North West Biodiversity Management Act, the Parks Board Act and the Tourism Act. “I’m glad future generations will benefit from these laws,” he says.
The long hours demanded by his job don’t faze him. “When you’re passionate about what you do, it becomes part of you,” he says, adding that he still finds it hard to believe he’s risen to this level in his career. “I’ve always been a hard worker, but I never imagined I’d be making such an impact on the country at this young age. Every day feels surreal.”
