MMASABUDI KWANAITE, MAKE-UP ARTIST: MAKEUPBYMASABU
Describe a typical working day. Scheduling appointments for prospective clients through various media platforms like email, WhatsApp and Instagram, as well as travelling from one client to another offering face beats and one-on-one makeup tutorials.
What skills are important in your job? Talent isn’t enough – you also need to interact with clients professionally and have basic interpersonal and business skills. That includes responding to enquiries timeously, honouring all appointments, always being punctual and, above all, knowing and respecting what clients want. All of this helps you keep existing clients and attract new ones.
What’s the best skincare beauty advice you ever received? Apply sunscreen daily to delay the ageing process and always wash make-up off before going to bed because skin breathes and restores itself while we’re sleeping.
What’s the most overlooked aspect of your industry? There’s a misperception that you can’t make a career out of make-up. In fact, it’s one of the fastest-growing industries globally. We’re seeing people like Kyler Jenner generating estimated turnovers of around $99 million through make-up. Locally, there are more and more young people interested in pursuing this as a career.
How has technology changed the beauty industry? It’s made things a lot easier through social media, which allows people to find out about make-up trends and exchange opinions. It’s also easier to advertise your services to a wide-ranging audience because the Internet is a very powerful marketing tool, if used correctly.
What’s your favourite make-up product? Kryolan foundation. It provides full coverage and lasts all day.
What’s your favourite beauty trend? Contouring and highlighting. It allows me to make certain facial features stand out and others less prominent. These techniques make the overall face look younger, if they’re applied correctly.
