Good weekend for local schools’ teams

- DAVE ALEXANDER SPORTS REPORTER

DIAMANTVELD High School’s Under-19 rugby team took on their Upington High counterparts in a match that served as the main curtain-raiser to the Griquas vs Blue Bulls clash at Griqua Park on Saturday afternoon.

In the end it was the home team that thrashed their opponents 52- 9 with the hosts managing to run in eight tries with Charles Williams, André du Toit, Etdeon Greyvenstein, Glen Nieuwoudt (2), De-An Ackerman, Jody Schmidt and Bernard Jansen all crossing the whitewash, and Williams managing to convert six of the tries.

DHS coach Jaco Dames told the DFA that his team had managed to execute their game plan perfectly. “We wanted to step up and play good rugby with ball in hand and that is exactly what the team did.

“The forwards and backs all interlinked and played the new style of rugby that Diamantveld wants to play. I am very proud of my team and the way they played, but there is still room for improvement and we are looking forward to Friday’s match against Landboudal, at Diamantveld headquarters.”

Friday’s match at Diamantveld will be played under lights and kicks off at 6.30pm. OTHER RESULTS FROM DIAMANTVELD ARE:

RUGBY vs Upington High: DHS Under-19B won 12-0, DHS Under-16A won 13-7, DHS Under-15A won 15-5, DHA Under-14A won 64-0. vs Duineveld: DHS Under-16B lost 22-8, DHS Under-14B won 55-0.

TENNIS vs Upington High: Boys won 8-1, Girls won 9-0 and Mixed won 5-1 (DHS won by 22 matches to 2).

Meanwhile, Northern Cape High School hosted rugby teams from Duineveld over the weekend and the following results were recorded: Under-14A won 28-0, Under-15A won 22-14, Un- der-16A won 23-17 and Under-19B lost 40-17.

The Under-19A team managed a 24-all draw against their Duineveld counterparts, with tries by Tries Cameron Hufke (two) and Chadwyn November, while Hufke kicked three conversions and slotted a penalty.

NCH coach Deon Carney, though pleased with his team's attacking play, said that he was slightly disappointed with their lapses in concentration.

“We played really well, but had a few lapses in defence at certain times, but we also had brilliant defence on a few other occasions. We allowed them to score directly after we had scored a few times as well, but our attack has improved no end and I am very proud of the boys.

“However, we should have won this match, but in our opinion the referee made a few blatant errors at crucial times throughout the game.

“This was very disappointing for us, especially when the decisions make a negative impact on the way the kids play.”
