Reward still on offer for info on cop killings

A REWARD of R300 000 is still on offer to anyone who can provide the police in the Free State with information regarding the killing of two police officers in Koffiefontein recently.

This is according to the provincial police commissioner, Lebeoana Tsumane, who yesterday urged anyone with information about the killings of Obert Mekoa and David Manjo in the early morning hours of June 29 to come forward.

The bodies of the two 32-year-old constables were found at the local police station when their colleagues returned from their evening patrols.

Mekoa was shot once in the head while Manjo had been fatally shot in the back and in the head.

The incident received widespread condemnation for violence against members of the SAPS and provoked discussions to determine ways of ensuring safer working conditions for police officials.

Among the recommendations that have been made are the extensive use of CCTV and body cameras in every police station in the country.

The incident in Koffiefontein was the third time in one week that criminals targeted South African police stations after about 30 firearms, including 9mm pistols, R5 rifles and shotguns, were reported stolen from a police station in Peddie in the Eastern Cape, while a sergeant from Lingelethu West SAPS, in the Western Cape, was shot in the face by attackers.
