Baxter invited to fine-tune Amajita’s Cosafa campaign
BAFANA Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has called on the South Africa Under-20 training camp to assist with their preparations for the 2017 Cosafa Youth Championships to be hosted in Kitwe, Zambia, between December 6-16.
Baxter was invited to assist at Amajita’s training and give some insight to the players about the importance of junior tournaments in respect to building their experience on the African continent.
Amajita head coach Thabo Senong started the camp with only 21 players instead of the expected 26 as some were withdrawn from the squad due to school exams.
However, this has not derailed his plans as he believes the pool of players is big enough to give new players a chance to join the Amajita set up.
“We decided to invite coach Baxter to allow the players to meet the coach and for him to share some of his experience as they are the future senior players. The players were very excited to have a session with him,” said Senong.
“We had a great response from all 21 players in the first training session and we are very grateful to all the clubs that released their players.
“We are going to have an intense week of training in preparation for the Cosafa Under-20 Youth Championships and announce our preliminary squad as soon as possible,” said Senong.
South Africa has been drawn into group B of the tournament and will be looking to defeat Egypt, Mozambique and Mauritius on their route to the final where they lost out to this year’s tournament host Zambia in the 2016 edition. –
