Pirates have started the year on a good foot

-

Or maybe Pirates were simply the beneficiaries of an indulgent festive period by their opponents. The remaining games will tell us more.

Enough has been said about the newfound zest of the Bucs. Unfortunately we cannot see the same thing happening across the road at Naturena. There the erstwhile Phefeni Glamour Boys still struggle with their performances – sometimes hot and sometimes cold. Maybe they will find inspiration for the remainder of the season to pick up their game and abandon their title deed to the fourth spot on the log – a position which they have held on for most of last season.

You may have noticed that we have a very strange situation in the Premier Soccer League log standings right now. Rookie coach Benni McCarthy is a league title chaser with his new club Cape Town City. This is quite an achievement for the Cape Flats boykie seeing that more decorated coaches, and here we think of Gavin Hunt, are desperate to notch up the wins and lift the Clever Boys out of the basement position where they have languished for 15 matches.

Two more losses for Hunt and his team and they will be serious challengers for the status and fate of the former pride of Dube township, Moroka Swallows FC. Two more losses will put Bidvest Wits out of contention for league honours. It will also mean they lose out on a top eight position. They will also not make it back into any of the Confederation of African Football administered competitions.

The worst is that Wits might completely drop out of the Premier League itself. I hope It does not get to that point though. The Clever Boys have fellow travellers going south.
