Plan to revamp athletic track
THE SOUTH African Youth Council-Northern Cape (SAYC-NC), in partnership with Inqaba Yokulinda, a youth non-profit organisation, plan to refurbish the Galeshewe Stadium athletic track with funds from the national lottery.
Spokesperson for the project, Keobakile Perpetua Musunse, said there was a growing need for sport and recreational facilities and sustainable infrastructure in the city.
“In communities where facilities exist, they are not properly located for easy access. The project will enable pupils from predominantly disadvantaged schools to train at sports facilities closer to home, especially during the athletic season.
“The programme is also designed to grow local talent and accelerate the development of athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds.”
She added that the facility would deter young people from poor communities from turning to drugs and crime.
“As a result, our emphasis has been to guarantee that our focus through this partnership is on making the sports arena a safe environment for young people to develop.”
Musunse stated that they had held a substance abuse awareness campaign in ward five, Galeshewe, where drug use was rife.
“Through the partnership, 30 young people from non-profit organisations will undergo accredited skills and development programmes so that they can lead secure and independent lives.”
