Old age home resident fixes potholes himself
WITH the Stillerweë Basaar likely to result in plenty of traffic in the area tomorrow morning, a 74-year-old man from the retirement home has taken it upon himself to repair potholes in Kestellhof.
Resident of Stillerweë, Willem Hauptfleisch, said that the village was preparing for one of it major events for the year with the annual Basaar, scheduled to take place tomorrow morning.
This event is extremely popular among staff, residents, family members and the general public, alike.
However, with several of the roads in the vicinity of Stillerweë, including Dennis, Luther and Leipoldt, pocked with potholes, the 74-year-old pensioner said that he had decided to take it upon himself to do some maintenance work on the neglected infrastructure.
“We also had to repair the potholes before last year’s bazaar, yet here we are, doing it again,” Hauptfleisch said yesterday afternoon.
“The damage has been reported to the municipality but nothing seems to be done about it.
Shocking
“The roads are in such a shocking condition and full of potholes that even painting lines is practically impossible.
“As a result, the traffic lanes aren’t clearly marked out and motorists are already swerving to avoid potholes. It is only a matter of time before someone drives into oncoming traffic and gets badly hurt.
“There are many elderly drivers in this area who use these roads and they are the ones who are at risk.”
The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality could not be reached for comment yesterday.
