NC dept to launch its road safety campaign

- BENIDA PHILLIPS STAFF REPORTER

ROAD safety during the festive season will again be highlighted when the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison launches its annual festive season road safety campaign, Arrive Alive, in Colesberg today.

The spokesperson for the department, Patsy Alley, said the objective of Arrive Alive is to reduce road accidents and road fatalities through comprehensive campaigns and educational awareness programmes.

“This campaign is an intensification of road and law enforcement efforts to coincide with increased road user volumes over the festive period.

“Every year sees the activation of a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement agencies and stakeholders taking to the roads to ensure we reach our loved ones without incident.

“An action plan is drawn up to strategically deploy resources and intensify operations across the Province, especially along critical routes during this time,” said Alley.

She added that although the road fatality rate in the Province is lower compared to the country, there is still more that needs to be done to ensure that nobody becomes a road fatality statistic.

“Even though the Northern Cape accident statistics on road fatalities has been the lowest on average nationally compared to other provinces, more needs to be done to prevent the loss of lives through accidents that could have been avoided.

“In the interest of public safety we must insist on a zero-tolerance approach to lawlessness and reckless behaviour,” Alley said.
