Schools scoop busi­ness awards

THE 2018 Schools’ Busi­ness Plan Com­pe­ti­tion, hosted by the Frances Baard District Mu­nic­i­pal­ity, cul­mi­nated in an awards cer­e­mony held at the Kim­ber­ley Big Hole Mine Mu­seum Precinct re­cently.

The over­all win­ner in the tourism cat­e­gory was Wil­liam Pescod High School while the over­all win­ner in the busi­ness stud­ies sec­tor was North­ern Cape High School.

The com­pe­ti­tion, which took place over a pe­riod of three months, pro­motes tourism and busi­ness devel­op­ment and en­trepreneur­ship among pupils and en­cour­ages them to think cre­atively about the role of in­for­ma­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tion tech­nolo­gies in tourism and busi­ness devel­op­ment.

Since its in­cep­tion the pro­ject has raised aware­ness and im­pacted pos­i­tively on the devel­op­ment of tourism within schools in the district.

The pro­ject af­fords all schools in the district of­fer­ing tourism and busi­ness stud­ies the op­por­tu­nity to par­tic­i­pate in the com­pe­ti­tion and to fur­ther ca­pac­i­tate pupils in busi­ness plan writ­ing and pre­sen­ta­tion skills.

A to­tal of 10 schools par­tic­i­pated in this years’ com­pe­ti­tion.

Grade en­tries fo­cused on the fol­low­ing sec­tors: Grade 10 – Green­ing Pro­ject, Sport Tourism, and Es­tab­lish­ment of an In­for­ma­tion Cen­tre; Grade 11 – Tourism Route, Ad­ven­ture Tourism, Eco Tourism; and Grade 12 – Busi­ness Tourism.

The Busi­ness stud­ies sec­tor fo­cused on the com­pi­la­tion of a busi­ness plan com­piled by pupils in grade 10 to 12 fea­tur­ing a busi­ness plan, the trans­for­ma­tion of the busi­ness plan into an ac­tion plan and for­mu­lat­ing strate­gies that a busi­ness can use in re­sponse to the chal­lenges of a macro busi­ness en­vi­ron­ment.

All par­tic­i­pat­ing schools qual­i­fied for a devel­op­ment in­cen­tive grant to the value of R5 000. FBDM will use the prize monies to pro­cure fur­ni­ture and other items for use in the tourism class­rooms.
