WE ARE informed that the refrigerator car service between Kimberley and Vryburg is now in operation. This will be pleasant news for those interested in agricultural production and distribution as well as the consuming public as the recent sultry weather was very trying indeed. The cool car solves very difficult problems. AN UNIDENTIFIED African child was killed in an accident near the centre of Kimberley at midday on Saturday. During the relatively quiet weekend period municipal ambulance crews assisted no more than 15 assault victims. All were non-white. There have been no reports of accidents in the Kimberley area, but fire tenders were called out twice at the weekend to deal with minor blazes in the African locations. THE RAISING of the flood lights at the Kimberley Country Club yesterday morning was described by the chairman of the Griqualand West Cricket Board, Mr Mike Doherty, as a ‘historic and exciting event for Kimberley’. With the early arrival of the special crane from Vereeniging yesterday morning, workmen had the first pylon up well ahead of schedule. THE NORTHERN Cape town of Richmond will once again become a literary paradise when it hosts the second annual Karoo Book, Art and Food Fair called Bookbedonnerd from October 22 to 24. Talks by South African writers and lectures by experts on all things Karoo, book exhibitions and the growing number of books housed in the town’s bookshops make this festival a must for bibliophiles. Bookbedonnerd2 will feature a wide variety of writers, critics and entertainers.
