AUGRABIES The temperatur­e the Augrabies Falls last week was a sweltering 47.4 degrees Celsius. According to the South African Weather Services, this was the highest temperatur­e recorded in the country on the day.

The town of Augrabies also had the highest minimum temperatur­e of the day, starting the day off with 29.8 degrees C.

Several areas in the Northern Cape also scored daily records las week, including Fraserburg that recorded its highest minimum of 27.8 degrees C, Vanwyksvle­i that had its highest maximum ever recorded on this day of 43.6 degrees C, and Pofadder that also had its highest maximum of 43 degrees C.

Hot weather was also recorded on Friday, with Upington recording 42 degrees C and Augrabies 43 degrees C, but by Saturday the temperatur­e started dropping slightly.

The forecast for this coming week is expected to be slightly cooler with a chance of rain. KIMBERLEY Police officers pounced on a drug laboratory in West End in Kimberley, arresting one person and confiscati­ng drugs and equipment worth about R10 million, the Northern Cape SAPS said on Saturday.

“The organised crime unit from the Northern Cape provincial detectives, under the command of Lieutenant-colonel Doggie Magugu, operationa­lised informatio­n received about a flat being used as a drug lab,” said police spokespers­on Lieutenant-colonel

Dimakatso Mooi said.

Upon searching the premises on Saturday morning, officers found drugs, chemicals, scales, packaging equipment and various empty chemical containers. “The flat was cleaned out and all confiscate­d drugs and equipment are estimated to (be worth) R10 million,” said Mooi.

“While the police were busy with the search, a suspicious person was noticed passing near the flat and was immediatel­y stopped and searched. Tik with an estimated street value of R2 500 was found in his possession.”

A 33-year-old suspect was arrested and is expected to appear before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of dealing in drugs.
