Zoe has all the right moves Zoë Milford, a Grade 11 scholar at Northern Cape High School recently performed extremely well at the SA Junior Chess Championship in Boksburg, where she won six of her matches and tied one, after seven rounds. There were 2260 participants from all over South Africa at the championships.
The NC did not send a team and Milford took part in the Under-20 Girls’section for the Tshwane team. Tshwane took gold and Milford walked away with the first place board prize for the best player.
Zoe also teamed up with Vianco Freeman from Nelson Mandela Bay and together they claimed overall third place in the doubles, out of 250 teams. She was then chosen as one of the 107 participants to play in the largest simultaneous chess event on African soil against GM Levon Aronian who is the fourth-rated player in the world, where her game lasted 8 hours.
Because of her outstanding performances and hard work she will now compete in the invitational SA Closed Junior Championship to be held at Kopanong in March.
