UPINGTON The police seized dagga with an estimated street value of more than half a million rand that was found lying on the side of the road during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mambane said that members from the Covid-19 A-shift were conducting patrols in the Upington area to enforce lockdown regulations when they discovered the dagga.

“As they proceeded with the patrol duties on the N10 road, members discovered dagga along the roadside weighing 77.35 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R541 450.”

Mambane said that no arrests had been made. “An inquiry has been opened for further investigation.”

Members of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (the Hawks) conducted a raid at the SAPS Garage in Schmidtsdrift Road early yesterday morning.

The spokesperson for the Hawks in the Northern Cape, Nomthandazo Mnisi, said they were investigating a case of fraud and corruption relating to the procurement for services of vehicles amounting to R1.4 million.

“The investigation started in 2017. No arrests have been made as yet,” said Mnisi. UPINGTON Three suspects have been arrested by the Upington police after they allegedly robbed a tuck shop in Raaswater on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said that the three suspects, aged between 23 and 36 years old, allegedly assaulted and threatened two foreign nationals, who owned the tuck shop, at gunpoint.

Ramatseba said the suspects allegedly stole cash, cigarettes and a cellphone before fleeing the scene.

“The police were alerted and they immediately traced and arrested the three suspects.

The members also managed to recover some of the stolen items. The suspects are expected to appear before the Upington Magistrate’s Court soon. The police investigation continues,” said Ramatseba.
