Winless Griquas hope to make fresh start in Currie Cup

- DAVE ALEXANDER

WITH the Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked competition over, next in line is the Carling Currie Cup starting this weekend. Tafel Lager Griquas kick off their 2020 campaign tomorrow at 4.30pm in Kimberley against the Lions.

The Cheetahs will defend the crown they won in 2019 final against Lions. The Bulls, Pumas, Sharks and Western Province are the other teams participating in the tournament.

The Bulls are the favourites to take the cup with close competition from Western Province.

Although Griquas failed to win any of its matches in Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked, it has not been a completely barren season for Scott Mathie’s team in terms of learning and improving as the season goes along.

They have plenty of young and exciting players, who are very keen to show their skills and to improve on them.

They punched above their weight against the Bulls at Loftus and also pushed the Sharks all the way.

They were also very competitive against the Cheetahs.

“This is the Currie Cup and we look forward to hosting the Lions here in Kimberley,” Mathie said.

“We are looking to build on our last outing against the Sharks at home. We know that the Lions have very strong set pieces, especially their scrums, so we are going to be up for that up front in order to get the amount of possession we want.

“We also know that they are a very dangerous team and you can not give them any opportunities. We must be very good with the ball in hand and not allow any turnovers. They will challenge our defence through width and space.”
