KIMBERLEY Sub District (KSD) bowls kicked off its 2020-2021 with a few surprises with five teams managing to reach the Northern Cape Pairs final which will take place tomorrow and on Sunday.

The best KSD men’s and ladies’ pairs participated in last week’s tournament at Beaconsfield Park. They were competing for the KSD championship.

The five winners from the KSD tournament will now progress to the next stage where they will face off against 16 teams from the other three sub districts this weekend.

The winner of the tournament will be crowned Northern Cape bowls champions. The tournament will be held in Kimberley with teams coming from across the Province, including Upington and Vryburg.

The Beaconsfield Bowls Club dominated the KSD pairs by making both the men’s and women's finals.

The men's final was contested between Charles Peter Mathewson and his father, Etienne Mathewson, who took on Scotty Elliot and John Minopetros.

Scotty and John won the final and will be heading to the Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) finals as pair favourites.

In the ladies section, Annelie Mathewson teamed up with Daphne Minopetros and faced off against the eventual winners of day, Charmaine Roelofse and Letticia Sterley.

Northern Cape Bowls spokesperson, Jacques Swanepoel, extended an invitation to all sports fanatics: “If you think you have what it takes to also become a champion why not find out how to get involved in the sport of bowls by visiting one of the many local clubs in your area”.
