Soccer action returns to NC

- NEVILLE MOTLHABAKWE

THIS weekend will mark the first time that almost all divisions of the South African Football Association (Safa) affiliates will be in action in the Northern Cape since the onset of Covid-19.

The Sol Plaatje Local Football Association (SPLFA) kicked off a month ago at three venues in Kimberley.

LFA chairperson, Seabata Makhele, at the time, announced that the association had endorsed Galeshewe’s artificial turf, the West End Club and the Kutlwanong stadium to host games under the Covid regulations.

LFA treasurer, Cecil Thebe, confirmed that clubs will see action at all three venues tomorrow.

This weekend the provincial ABC Motsepe League enters its tenth week of the first leg season games. Safa provincial secretary, Willem Coetzee, confirmed that fourteen matches will be played tomorrow, Sunday and on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

In the Frances Baard District, Safa regional secretary, Ponatshego Mondela, said they will play games for weeks eleven and twelve. The league was also in the process of finalising the paperwork for next week’s start of the Frances Baard Regional Ladies League.

Coetzee confirmed that the Sasol Ladies League, of which he is the administrator, has also kicked off and teams will be in action across the Province.

In the senior ranks, Richmond Ladies FC, the Province’s only club in the Safa National Women’s League (SNWL) has to date played two first leg matches in that league. Last weekend they beat Witbank Coal Wizards 3-2. They lost their first match against Polokwane’s First Touch Academy 6-3.
