A NORTHERN Cape teenager, Dino Jacobs, 19, who was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl, as well as the attempted rape of a woman, was sentenced to 26 years’ imprisonment by the Postmasburg Regional Court on Tuesday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said the first incident took place on March 6, 2019, when the 15-yearold girl was accosted by Jacobs while she was on her way to Shoprite from Postdene.

“He threatened her with a knife and demanded money. He forced her into an abandoned house where he raped her,” said Kock.

He added that three days later, on March 9, 2019, Jacobs accosted a 26-year-old woman in the veld near Postmasburg High School.

“He threatened her with a knife and demanded that she undress. The woman begged Jacobs not to rape her. He grabbed her cellphone and fled the scene. She contacted the police, who arrested the accused on March 11, 2019.”

Kock said that Jacobs abandoned his bail application.

“He was sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for rape and six years for attempted rape. His name will also be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.”

The provincial head of the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended Sergeant Lionel Rooiland and Constable Tshepiso Bele from the Postmasburg FCS for their investigative work of the two cases.

“The SAPS prioritises crimes perpetrated against women and children and will ensure that no impunity is granted to perpetrators of these heinous deeds.”
