Girl dies after being hit by thrown braai fork

- BOIPELO MERE

THE GALESHEWE police are investigating a case of murder following the death of eight-yearold Kehilwen ’Tsampi’ Moreeng, who died after being hit with a braai fork that was thrown at her by an 18-year-old suspect

It is believed that Tsampi died several hours after the incident, which took place on September 4, as a result of a small wound on the back of her head which was caused by the fork.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, who resided in Sewende Laan, was playing with her friends inside the yard on Saturday afternoon.

Sam said the young girl was accused of beating the suspect’s dog with a belt prior to the incident.

“The suspect then allegedly threw a fork at the victim,” Sam said.

The suspect was arrested and made a brief appearance in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court earlier this week. “He remains in custody until his bail appearance.”

The father of the deceased, Adam Moreeng, was left traumatised and kept on questioning why his baby was ripped away from him at such a young age.

According to Moreeng, he has been a single parent to his four children. The victim was his youngest child.

He explained that he does not know what exactly happened on the day of the incident, only that he was called to rush to his sister’s home because his daughter was injured.

He was told that the child was taken to his sister’s home after being injured.

He was told that the children were playing with a dog, which the owner did not approve of. “I learned that when the children were reprimanded, they ran away before the suspect threw the fork at them.

“When I arrived at my sister’s home I found my daughter in an already weak condition. The ambulance had already been called several times, but I called again.

“My daughter said she felt tired and wanted to sleep. There was a bleeding wound at the back of her head.

“We kept on calling the ambulance throughout the night. She said she was hungry but when we gave her something to eat she vomited.

“At around 3am she woke up and asked for food and water, which we gave her before she went to sleep again,” Moreeng said.

He said the ambulance only arrived the next day at around 8am.

“Now I have to also deal with the pain of scratching around for money to bury my little girl.”

She is expected to be buried tomorrow at her home in Johnson Kgotlaetsile Street, Sewende Laan.
