City basketball players dream of national championships

- DANIE VAN DER LITH

THE KIMBERLEY Basketball Super League continued to captivate audiences last weekend, and the added prospect of supporting the Under-18 team’s journey to the National Championships adding a new layer of excitement. Kimberley’s Maloof Skate Park played host to some incredible action last Saturday.

In the Women’s section, the Celestials once again showcased their dominance, securing yet another emphatic victory over the Greenpan Wolves ladies. The Celestials continued to solidify their position as the team to beat in the league.

Meanwhile, in the men’s section, the Greenpoint Wizards and the Sishen Cobras rose to the top of the standings with resounding victories.

Wizards demolished Saints 38-81, while the Cobras overpowered the Kimberley Super Bulls 41-27.

The two teams are perched on the top of the Basketball Super League log with 12 points apiece; however, Wizards may have the edge due to them having a game in hand. With the excitement of last weekend’s games still lingering, basketball enthusiasts eagerly await the continuation of the league tomorrow.

The weekend’s matches are scheduled to commence at 10.30am and promise to provide another day filled with thrilling basketball showdowns. Supporters, players, and coaches alike are, no doubt, eager to witness more incredible displays of talent and fierce on-court competition.

And as the action and the excitement continue to bloom, the NC Basketball Association seized the opportunity to appeal to potential donors and sponsors to come on-board. They are looking for assistance to send an Under-18 team to the National Championships, in Bloemfontein from July 2-7.

The Association hoped that generous contributions would help fulfil the dreams of these aspiring athletes and provide them with a platform to showcase their skills on the national stage. With the upcoming league matches and the noble cause to support young basketball talent, the basketball scene in Kimberley seems poised for a potentially bright and promising future.
