A Fifteen-year-old Kimberley learner, Skye Coates, aims to make waves in the world of fashion as she gears up to take part in the prestigious European Model Showcase in Paris next month.

In an exclusive interview with the DFA, Skye shared her excitement and journey to this remarkable opportunity, shedding light on her aspirations, challenges faced and the support that fuels her dreams.

The European Model Showcase provides the opportunity for aspiring fashion models to meet agents who are scouting new faces for their agencies.

The news of her selection for the showcase was met with sheer disbelief and overwhelming joy for Skye.

"Being selected among so many experienced and talented models came as a real surprise to me because I had never modelled before this event," Skye explained.

"It was my first time walking in front of so many people. I felt nervous, but excited. That moment that my name was called out, my heart literally skipped a beat."

Skye's journey into modelling is one fuelled by passion and self-discovery.

"I have always enjoyed dressing up, even if there was nowhere to go. As I grew older, I started taking more notice of the fashion industry and even though I am a tomboy at heart, I liked pretty clothes and admired the models wearing them.

“Due to my lack of self-confidence, my mom decided to enrol me in the International Arts Talent Showcase (IATS). I don't think she realised at that moment how big of a competition it was.

“The regional director of the European Model Showcase contacted my mother, informing her that all auditions in South Africa and Africa had concluded, but I could still submit a 36-second video showcasing my talent. Mom then informed me that I had to make a video.

“Without knowing where it would lead, I created and submitted the video. The following day, I received a call confirming my participation as an IATS contestant.

“Last October, I travelled to Johannesburg to take part in the event. On the night of my modelling debut, I felt extremely nervous. However, the moment I stepped onto the stage I realised that modelling was what I wanted to pursue. I can't quite put it into words, but I discovered a newfound confidence within myself."

Skye faced the challenge of limited opportunities in the local modelling scene.

"Living in Kimberley, young models don't get the opportunity to audition for many casts or major brands. Being in school and travelling is also difficult."

However, with unwavering determination and support from her family, Skye is breaking barriers and pursuing her dreams. "Since I was chosen as a top model, I have started homeschooling, which is ideal as I can attend my live classes from anywhere," she revealed.

As a dedicated student, Skye prioritises her education while pursuing her modelling career.

"I put my schooling first," she emphasised. "Till then, I am trying to stay healthy and brush up on my French," she added, highlighting her proactive approach to managing her time and commitments.

Skye acknowledges the unwavering support of her family, friends and mentors, crediting them for her success.

“I'm truly blessed to have an incredible support system. My parents and godparents are my biggest cheerleaders, always encouraging me to strive for excellence and stay true to myself in everything I do.

“They've been instrumental in organising a golf day at the Kimberley Golf Club on March 8. The support from my friends, family, and the Kimberley community has been overwhelming, making this event truly unforgettable. We still have space for four-ball teams if anyone else wants to join in.

“I'm immensely grateful to my sponsors, whose support has been invaluable. Without them, along with my family and godparents, none of this would have been possible.

“A special thanks also to my modelling director, Ms Elsubie Louwrens, whose unwavering support has turned this opportunity into a reality for me.”

Through her participation in the European Model Showcase, Skye hopes to inspire other young people to chase their dreams.

"I hope to inspire young people like myself to reach for their dreams. You don't need make-up to shine; you just need faith and commitment."

Looking ahead, Skye envisions a future filled with runway opportunities and collaborations with renowned designers worldwide.

"I want to walk the runway locally and internationally and work with designers from all over the world. The European Model Showcase could potentially make this happen for me as I will be in a hall at the Hilton Opera House with agencies such as Wilhemina, Caryn, ABC and many more prestigious modelling hubs.

“I have been staying on top of the latest modelling trends and researching European fashion designers, along with modelling agencies from Asia, Germany and across Europe. Online Zoom training sessions, courtesy of my modelling agency, 33, and Me Talent Agency, have been instrumental in preparing me mentally for the event.

“In March, I'll have my portfolio photoshoot in Johannesburg. This portfolio will be essential as I prepare for Paris. In the meantime, I'm focusing on staying healthy and honing my French skills.”

To aspiring models and fashion enthusiasts, Skye offers sage advice: "Dream big and never give up. Love yourself, but remain humble. You don't need make-up to shine, just faith and commitment, and, lastly, believe in yourself."

As Skye prepares to grace the runways of Paris, she embodies the spirit of determination and resilience, poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of fashion. With her talent and tenacity, she is set to shine brightly on the international stage, representing not only Kimberley but the aspirations of young dreamers everywhere.
