THE PAST weekend bore witness to an intense showdown at the Northern Cape Bowls Singles Championships, where the top 16 men and women bowlers from the region engaged in fierce competition for the coveted titles.

Hosted jointly by the Beaconsfield Park Bowling Green Club and Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club, the event showcased exceptional talent and sportsmanship.

Saturday marked the completion of sectional play, setting the stage for Sunday’s thrilling semi-finals and finals. In the men’s singles category, David Paulse emerged victorious after a gripping final match against Scotty Elliot.

Paulse’s skill and determination propelled him to clinch the championship title, with Marco Geel securing third place and Wilhelm Malan finishing fourth, both delivering commendable performances throughout the *

tournament.

Reflecting on his victory, David Paulse expressed his thrill and honour at becoming the Northern Cape singles champion for lawn bowls. He shared his gratitude for the opportunities afforded by joining the

Beaconsfield Park Bowling Club and highlighted his journey of overcoming challenges and injuries to achieve success.

“Competing at a provincial level by winning the Northern Cape pairs, mixed pairs, and fours in the past; at a national level, achieving gold at the

South African Development Singles in 1998 and silver in the South African mixed pairs with René van Niekerk in 2021 is a remarkable achievement,” Paulse remarked.

“Now winning the Northern Cape singles is the cherry on top and something that doesn’t come every day.”

Paulse expressed his anticipation of representing the Northern Cape at future competitions and his commitment to further honing his skills.

He extended his gratitude to his club, family, friends, and fellow bowlers for their support and encouragement.

In the Women’s singles final, Marietjie van den Berg demonstrated her prowess on the green, securing the championship for the second consecutive year. Her consistent excellence earned her a well-deserved victory over René van Niekerk in an electrifying final match.

Reflecting on her victory,

Van der Berg emphasised the formidable competition prevalent in the province and commended the exceptional quality of the greens.

Despite the geographical challenges for Kalahari residents, she attributed her success to the courage instilled by her upbringing.

Overall, the event celebrated not only the outstanding achievements of the winners but also highlighted the competitive spirit and dedication of all participants, serving as a testament to the thriving bowling community in the region.

As the curtains drew on an exhilarating weekend of bowls, organisers extended their gratitude to both the Beaconsfield Park Bowling Green Club and Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club for their efforts in hosting a successful and memorable tournament.

With champions crowned and memories made, participants and spectators alike eagerly anticipate the next edition of this prestigious event.
