Cole keen to take his ‘Elizabedi’ inspiration to Italy
IT’S STARTING to look like Kimberley just can't stop churning out talented sportspeople. In that tradition, the latest sensation is a teenager from the Diamond City, a city known for its vibrant rugby culture.
Sixteen-year-old rugby fanatic
Cole Limburgh has been chosen to play for Kimberley Boys High School in an incredible endeavour: the Southern Cape Sports Tour in Italy.
This opportunity, which will take place from September 21 to September 30, this year, is a big deal for Cole since it combines his love of rugby with his aspirations for the future.
Cole’s affinity for rugby dates back to his early childhood and was inspired by a strong rugby-loving family history. He was first introduced to the world of rugby through his mother’s involvement with the Griqualand West Rugby Union. Cole remembers being a special guest at a Blue Bulls vs Griquas game and getting to meet renowned players.
It’s one of his favourite childhood memories. “Watching the greats play was the best experience,” Cole says. “meeting them was the highlight of my life.”
Growing up in rugby-mad
Kimberley, Cole found himself immersed in a culture that nurtured discipline, respect, and technical prowess from a young age. From Staats Primary School to Newton Primary School, and now representing Kimberley Boys High School, rugby has been more than just a sport for Cole; it has become a kind of sanctuary, guiding him through life’s complexities.
For Cole, rugby embodies more than just physicality and skill; it represents a legacy of camaraderie, tradition, and shared passion that transcends generations.
Rugby is more than simply a sport to Cole; it’s a way of life that is strongly rooted in his family’s history. “My family has a long history of rugby players,” he told the DFA, emphasising his innate connection to the sport.
Cole was chosen from among 2,700 participants from elite schools around the nation, and his trip to Italy represents the fruition of years of commitment and diligence.
Cole acknowledges, “I practically wept when they called my name,” capturing the intense feelings sparked by this once-in-a-lifetime chance. For him, this tour is a personal voyage of fulfilment and memory as well as an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities on a global platform.
“It’s a chance to fulfil a dream of competing at a prestigious event,” he says, “an opportunity to learn and grow through facing top competition.”
The significance of this opportunity resonates deeply with Cole, as he carries the memory of his late father and numerous family members who continue to inspire and motivate him each day.
“I want to make my dad proud,” he shares with the DFA. “He isn’t here any longer, but I want to try my best and do my best.”
In preparation for the tournament, Cole and his teammates have been undergoing rigorous training under the guidance of their coach, Tumisho Khukhele. From strength and fitness sessions to strategic planning, each aspect of the game and preparing the players mentally and physically, is meticulously dealt with.
As a lock, Cole embodies the tenacity and agility required to excel in his position, drawing inspiration from players like Eben Etzebeth. The young player is keen to, like Etzebeth, live his passion on the world stage.
Beyond the competition itself, Cole’s anticipation extends to the cultural immersion awaiting him in Italy. From relishing authentic Italian cuisine to marvelling at historical landmarks like the Colosseum, every moment promises to be a blend of sporting excellence and personal enrichment.
With obvious excitement, Cole says, “I can’t wait to play rugby as a Kimberley Boys High School student in Italy and take my first international flight.”
But achieving this goal has its own set of difficulties, chief among them being financial limitations.
Cole modestly reaches out to his community, asking for help in realising his dreams. When asked what he would say to the people who are able to support him, Cole was modest.
“Your support in enabling me to realise my goals would be a ray of hope,” he said, highlighting the influence of group support on the development of personal goals.
Every contribution, whether big or small, serves as a testament to the collective spirit of support and unity that defines Kimberley's community.
