RECOGNISING the importance of skills development that facilitates access to employment opportunities, Loeriesfontein community leaders collaborated with local wind farms to successfully implement a “Learner’s and Driving Licence Programme”.

The initiative was a direct response to the community’s expressed need for assistance in obtaining learner’s and driving licences and it, in turn, sparked considerable interest among the local youth.

Designed to empower the youth with vital skills and qualifications, the collaborative effort aims to equip them for success in various aspects of life.

The first phase of the programme targeted 30 individuals from the community, with over 60% of the participants successfully obtaining their learner's licences, valid for two years.

Partnering with a service provider based in the nearby town of Calvinia, the programme conducted comprehensive classroom sessions focused on the K53 curriculum. These sessions equipped participants with the necessary knowledge and preparation to excel in the learner's licence exam.

Vanessa Fredericks, the economic development manager for Loeriesfontein

and Khobab wind farms, the funders of the programme, explained that the programme exemplifies their commitment to fostering sustainable development and empowerment within the community.

“By providing access to skills and essential qualifications, we are not only facilitating the enhancement of individual livelihoods but, in turn, are strengthening the fabric of the community,” said Fredericks.

One of the programme participants, Anke O’neill, said that the programme has the potential to open doors to employment.

“My experience was an enriching one that taught me valuable insights about the road and the learner's licence. The classes were not only informative but also tailored in a way that made them accessible to everyone. I feel fully prepared and at ease to take the next step, which is obtaining my driving licence,” said O’neill.

Looking ahead, this collaborative effort remains committed to supporting the 21 individuals who obtained their learner's licences as they progress towards acquiring their driving licences.

Through ongoing mentorship and guidance, these individuals will further enhance their prospects for employment and contribute positively to the development of the community.
