THE SUZUKI Griquas and the Airlink Pumas showcased their dominance in the SA Cup by securing impressive away victories in the competition last weekend.

At this stage of the competition, these two sides remain the only unbeaten teams, which sets up a potential tantalising top of the table clash down the line.

The log leaders from Kimberley faced a formidable challenge from the Boland Cavaliers but dug deep and emerged victorious with a commendable 48-30 triumph in Wellington last Saturday.

The enthralling encounter against the Cavaliers saw notable contributions from Griquas players, with tries scored by Carl

Els (2), Janco Uys, Stephan Smit, Thomas Bursey, Cameron Hufke, and Niel Otto.

Lubabalo Dobela and George Whitehead added conversions, while Dobela also slotted a penalty, further underscoring Griquas’ commanding performance on the field.

Meanwhile, in East London, the men from Mpumalanga, the Pumas, delivered a commanding * performance, securing a staggering 56-0 victory over the Border Bulldogs, marking their third clean sheet of the competition.

With five rounds of exhilarating action completed, Griquas maintained their leading position on the log, boasting 25 points from five consecutive wins. Despite sharing the same points tally, the Pumas currently sit second in the standings, trailing the Griquas based on points difference.

In a dramatic twist last weekend, the Griffons’ derby triumph over the Cheetahs propelled them into third place with 20 points, surpassing the Bloemfontein outfit, who now trail with 17 points. The standings also see the Cavaliers in fourth place with 12 points, followed closely by the Eagles and Leopards, both with 10 points. The Elephants,

Valke, and Bulldogs round off the standings with 8, 7, and 0 points, respectively.

Excitement looms large as the action continues into the sixth round this weekend, with five more exhilarating games set to take place.

Griquas are scheduled to lock horns with the Eastern Province, currently occupying the 8th position on the log, at the Central Rugby Field, Kariega (formerly Uitenhage), tomorrow at 3pm.

There’s still everything to play for with still a month to go, and the SA Cup action continues next weekend in round six of the competition.

Following the conclusion of the single round of matches, the two top-ranked sides will face off and contest the Cup final on Saturday, May 25.
