ORGANISERS of the 2024 Absa Wildeklawer sports tournament, hosted by Diamantveld High School, have hailed the sports festival a huge success. The tournament, touted as the biggest of its kind in the country, brought together teams from far and wide to compete in different sporting codes.

Reflecting on the event, Stacy Viljoen, the deputy principal of Diamantveld High School, spoke to the DFA and expressed admiration for the monumental effort put forth by both Absa Wildeklawer and the dedicated staff of Diamantveld.

“It was a busy but exciting tournament," Viljoen said, emphasising the staggering amount of work invested to ensure that the event was a resounding success; a source of immense pride for Kimberley and Hoërskool Diamantveld.

Viljoen was excited about the opportunity the tournament provided for diverse learners to come together with a shared goal. “The Absa Wildeklawer tournament, like Hoërskool Diamantveld, creates a space for growth and development irrespective of what the final score says,” Viljoen told the DFA, underscoring the importance of fostering an environment conducive to holistic development.

The impact of hosting such a prestigious tournament extended far beyond the confines of the school grounds, permeating the entire community. Viljoen emphasised the vital role played by students, staff, parents, and the broader community in ensuring the smooth execution of the event.

“The financial injection into Kimberley is massive,” she noted, acknowledging the boon to local businesses and the opportunities for informal interactions that fostered cooperation and teamwork.

Looking ahead, Viljoen said that Diamantveld High School remains steadfast in its commitment to building on the success of hosting the Absa Wildeklawer tournament. “This tournament gives the school a platform visible to many aspiring sportsmen and women,” she added.

As for the funds raised during the tournament, they will be instrumental in enhancing the school’s facilities and creating an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning. The deputy principal underscored the importance of fund-raising in modern school systems, and emphasised the school’s dedication to providing opportunities for all learners.

Despite the challenges inherent in organising an event of such magnitude, Diamantveld High School rose to the occasion. With meticulous planning and unwavering dedication, the school, in conjunction with Absa and Wildeklawer, ensured the smooth running of the tournament, leaving participants and visitors alike with unforgettable memories.

In terms of the school’s sporting achievements, Diamantveld’s netball team faced tough competition but showcased commendable resilience, while the rugby team emerged victorious in thrilling encounters against Marlow Landbou and St John’s College from New Zealand, reaffirming the school’s prowess on the sports field.

As the dust settles on another successful Absa Wildeklawer tournament, the legacy of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and excellence forged on the fields of the host school will remain etched in the memories of each player and supporter.

With another year before the next instalment of this remarkable tournament, schools will no doubt already be preparing to increase their standings for next year.
