New lifeblood for Cape flows

The first of sev­eral ground­wa­ter bore-holes that form part of the Ta­ble Moun­tain Group (TMG) Aquifer and the City of Cape Town’s wa­ter strat­egy was of­fi­cially launched at Steen­bras Dam last week. Coun­cil ini­ti­ated drilling op­er­a­tions of the Steen­bras Well­field dur­ing the drought cri­sis and it is now pro­duc­ing its first yield of ground­wa­ter. Rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the mu­nic­i­pal­ity, in­clud­ing mayor Dan Plato and Xanthea Lim­berg (May­oral Com­mit­tee mem­ber for Wa­ter and Waste, pic­tured) were taken on a tour of the fa­cil­ity dur­ing the pro­ject launch last Wed­nes­day (5 Au­gust). The TMG Aquifer is be­lieved to be the largest in the world, with drilling reach­ing a depth of 710 m.
