Local star in new Netflix show
Worcester native Vanessa Ntlapo is over the moon that the show she starred in has been picked up by international streaming service Netflix.
The show first aired on local television networks in 2016, and has only one season. In the show, Jab, Ntlapo portrays the lead role of a female boxer, Bee Sondlo, chasing a successful career.
“She has a deep passion for boxing,” Ntlapo says, “and is also very protective of her family and very driven to get to where she wants to be.”
The charismatic 28-year-old has always wanted to be an actress.
“Since I can remember I wanted to act. But it is quite difficult to break into the industry. However, I didn’t solely focus on being an actress, yet it was always in the back of my mind while I was busy pursuing other avenues and furthering my education.”
She has a day job in advertising, but would like to work in the television industry full-time one day.
“I have a passion for advertising, basically storytelling is my thing and I would love to work in the industry, whether behind or in front of the camera, full time.”
The show was very well received locally when it first aired, and even won an award at the Zanzibar international Film
Festival in 2018.
“It’s amazing that even after the release in 2016, and only one season, the show still receives recognition,” Ntlapo gushes.
She believes because the show has a universal message, which is a big factor in its success. She also admits that should a second season be commissioned she would not hesitate to reprise her role as the young boxer.
In light of celebrating women this month she shares an inspirational message: “In spite of what’s going on in the world, and the many injustices, we need to remember who we are. Remember, we are powerful beyond measure, and with determination, hard work, and commitment we can change our lives for the better and, dare I say, the world too.”
