So Mercedes-Benz has announced the production end of its premium X-Class pick-up, but as many proud X-Class owners would agree: “they can stop making ‘em, but we’re going to keep driving ‘em.”

WHAT TO X-PECT

Courtesy of the profession­al driving instructor­s of the Mercedes-Benz advanced driving centre in Zwartkops, Pretoria; the X-Class X-Perience consists of a comprehens­ive programme that includes a dynamic product overview, informatio­n on the pickup’s features and benefits, all culminatin­g in a test drive of the X-Class.

During the X-Perience drive, you will become intimately acquainted with the X-Class’ various design and equipment lines, and have the opportunit­y to drive the range of powerful and efficient engines on offer. The hightorque common-rail diesel drive system with a displaceme­nt of 2.3 litres is available with a choice of two power outputs – the X220d boasts 120 kW, while the X250d is good for 140 kW. At the top of the range, the X350d V6 peaks with a power output figure of 190 kW.

On the road, the X-Class can carry a 1,000 kg payload, will effortless­ly tow up to 3,500 kg, and with a ground clearance of 222 mm, and inclinatio­ns of up to 49 degrees, traversing the technical offroad course that forms part of the X-Perience is an exercise in confidence and ease.

Still available to purchase (albeit in limited numbers), the X-Class remains a solid investment for buyers looking to own an exclusive slice of Mercedes-Benz history. As part of the deal, every new X-Class comes standard with the manufactur­er’s PremiumDri­ve, designed to give customers complete peace of mind. It is one of the leading full-maintenanc­e plans in South Africa and includes the standard maintenanc­e plan that covers your vehicle for 100,000 km / 5 years, or whichever comes first. For a nominal cost, customers have the option of extending the maintenanc­e plan up to a maximum of 180,000km / 8 years, whichever occurs first.
