NEW NOSTALGIA

It’s always nice to see new life breathed into a classic car, but when said classic gets future-proof architecture, well let’s just say it is the perfect recipe for clinging onto nostalgia. One such example is the RBW EV Roadster that is based on the ‘60s MGB Roadster. RBW Joined forces with Continental AG – famous for its Formula E technology – to electrify the Roadster. A 70 kW electric motor is situated in the back, and is paired with Lithium-Ion batteries under the bonnet to give the car excellent weight distribution that also has a dramatic influence on the Roadster’s handling. According to RBW Managing Director, Peter Swain, the engine architecture can be installed into other body shells like the Austin Healy, Mini and Jaguar E-Type to give these classic cars a new, and reliable, lease on life. Production is said to start in 2021 with an asking price of around R1.9 million excluding import duties. One has to wonder, though, will they create a sound machine to emulate the original sound of these classics since the gruff soundtrack is half the appeal.
