THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC!
Every month, we recap the latest electric vehicle news as the race to embrace all things electric in the motoring industry continues.
HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 BOLTS FROM THE PONY STABLE
As the first model in Hyundai’s new IONIQ brand, the IONIQ 5 is built on Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) architecture, referred to as the ElectricGlobal Modular Platform (E-GMP). The progressive design represents a departure from previous norms, exploring new design freedom presented in a dedicated all-electric car.
The IONIQ 5 offers innovative interior design, including eco-friendly materials with numerous touchpoints, sufficient performance, range (second only to Tesla), fast charging, and advanced connectivity. In addition to durability and safety, which Hyundai owners have come to expect from the brand, advanced driver assistance features promise an exceptional driving experience.
The IONIQ 5 is available with a range of varying battery and electric motor configurations. The top of the line IONIQ 5 is an all-wheel-drive (AWD) fitted with a 72.6 kWh battery and dual electric motors that produce 225 kWh and 605 Nm of torque for a zero to 100 km/h sprint in 5.2 seconds. When fitted with the smaller 58 kWh battery, the same dual-motor AWD layout can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Two additional singlemotor derivatives, including either a 72.6 kWh battery or the smaller 58 kWh battery, complete the line-up, with zero to 100 km/h acceleration times of 7.4 seconds and 8.5 seconds, respectively. All four derivatives have a top speed of 185 km/h.
Charging from a 350 kW DC public charger (available on the Ionity network in Europe), the IONIQ 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in only 18 minutes, or for a splash-and-dash, it takes a mere five minutes to add 100 km of range. Like all-electric cars, the IONIQ 5 can also be charged overnight from a standard 240 V AC wall outlet.
The IONIQ 5 also provides an innovative vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, allowing owners to freely use or charge any electronic device, such as an electric bicycle, scooter or camping equipment. Serving as a charger on wheels with two ports – one in the interior and another on the exterior – the exterior port can provide power even when the vehicle is turned off.
In addition, the IONIQ 5 can tow a trailer with a capacity of up to 1,600 kg, which is not possible with the Hyundai Kona EV.
Following the launch of IONIQ 5, Hyundai will expand its BEV line-up with the IONIQ 6, an electric sedan, and IONIQ 7, a large electric SUV.
