was a ruthless leader who didn’t tolerate any opposition. Many of his economic plans for China failed and millions of people died of hunger. In 1966, Mao started the Cultural Revolution to purge capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. Those who were against Mao were either killed or sent to do hard labour in camps. The violence ended in 1976 when Mao died.
It took the country many years to recover from the Cultural Revolution. It was only in the past 20 years that China managed to become a modern nation, and it modernised itself faster than any other country.
