was a ruth­less leader who didn’t tol­er­ate any op­po­si­tion. Many of his eco­nomic plans for China failed and mil­lions of peo­ple died of ­hunger. In 1966, Mao started the Cul­tural Rev­o­lu­tion to purge cap­i­tal­ist and tra­di­tional el­e­ments from Chi­nese so­ci­ety. Those who were against Mao were ei­ther killed or sent to do hard labour in camps. The vi­o­lence ended in 1976 when Mao died.

It took the coun­try many years to re­cover from the Cul­tural Rev­o­lu­tion. It was only in the past 20 years that China man­aged to be­come a mod­ern na­tion, and it mod­ernised it­self faster than any other coun­try.
