The school hol­i­days are a chal­leng­ing time to put lim­its in place, but it’s vi­tal.

“Child­hood de­vel­op­ment doesn’t stop when school breaks up,” says child psy­chi­a­trist Dr Bren­dan Belsham. “End­less hours on YouTube isn’t healthy for chil­dren, even if there’s no home­work to do.”

Here are his sug­ges­tions for al­ter­na­tives dur­ing the hol­i­days:

En­rol your child in a hol­i­day pro­gramme or a sports clinic.

En­list the help of grand­par­ents or ­other fam­ily mem­bers if you’ll be work­ing. Some­times they just need to be asked, and this qual­ity time is ben­e­fi­cial for both the younger and older gen­er­a­tions.
