SOUL QUEEN ON SCREEN
WE’VE lost ARETHA FRANKLIN but her story will live on. JENNIFER HUDSON, the singer-actress “anointed by Aretha Franklin herself” will still be playing the Queen of Soul in a movie based on her life, according to one of the film’s producers, CLIVE DAVIS. “We’re going forward and making the movie that Aretha wanted to make,” said Harvey Mason Jnr, a longtime music producer for Aretha who’d been working with the singer on the movie for the past year and a half until her death last month.
The only hitch is that the film has no director and possibly no script, but nobody will say for sure.
There have been plans for an Aretha movie for years – back in 2011 the singer said she wanted Halle Berry to play her, but Halle politely declined, saying she “couldn’t carry a tune”, and the current project was delayed by Aretha’s demands that she cast every character herself.
But her death could breathe new life into the movie. Aretha’s family, who will likely control her estate, will probably be a little less finicky over details like the casting of grandmothers, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
