BANYANA’S BRIGHTEST STARS
REFILOE JANE (26)
The Canberra United midfielder has been a mainstay and is on the verge of 100 caps for the national team. She made her Banyana debut in 2012 and played in two Olympic Games and multiple Cosafa Cup tournaments. She’s run out 96 times for Banyana and scored seven goals. She missed the Afcon final against Nigeria due to club commitments.
JANINE VAN WYK (31)
The defender has amassed 157 caps, the most by a South African footballer of any gender. In 2016 her move to Houston Dash saw her become the first South African woman to move to the American league. Having achieved her dream of qualifying for a World Cup, she has hinted she may retire at the end of the tournament.
THEMBI KGATLANA (22)
Her five goals up to the Awcon semifinal were the key to South Africa booking its spot at next year’s Women’s World Cup. Fans of the Houston Dash striker aren’t surprised by her performance. “She’s now a holistic player and realising the importance of her impact on the team,” football analyst Amanda Dlamini says.
