OLD age isn’t for sissies. Notic­ing a few more wrin­kles and grey hairs or hav­ing your grand­kids treat you as if you know noth­ing can be a bit of a blow to the ego. But there are some perks to be­ing over 60 – for in­stance, be­ing able to take ad­van­tage of great dis­counts on ev­ery­thing from gro­ceries to movies, bus tick­ets and ho­tel stays.

While ev­ery­one else is pay­ing full price, you could score your­self as much as 50% off. You just have to know where to go.


Pick n Pay Over-60s can earn double Smart Shop­per points on Wed­nes­days.

Spar Check with your lo­cal Spar if they have any spe­cials for over-60s. Be­cause they’re franchises, not all stores have the same dis­counts.

Game Be sure to sign up for the Game Se­nior Cit­i­zens’ Dis­count Card so you qual­ify for pen­sion­ers’ dis­counts on Wed­nes­days.

Builders Pen­sion­ers can look for­ward to a 10% dis­count on Wed­nes­days on all prod­ucts that aren’t al­ready discounted.

Makro Over-60s get up to 10% off gen­eral goods and up to 5% off food items on Tues­days. You just have to present your pen­sioner’s card (see box far right for in­for­ma­tion about how to get one).


Dis-Chem With its 60-Plus benefit pro­gramme, the phar­macy chain of­fers double points on Wed­nes­days for items bought in stores.

You also qual­ify for a free blood-­pres­sure check each month if you buy your chronic med­i­ca­tion at Dis-Chem.

Pen­sion­ers are also given dis­counts on se­lected sa­lon treatments and in­vi­ta­tions to 60 Plus tea par­ties.

You can sign up for a DisChem Loy­alty Benefit Card – which in­cludes the 60 Plus pro­gramme – in stores, on­line or via the Dis-Chem app.

Clicks With a Se­niors ClubCard, you earn double points on ev­ery sec­ond

You could score as much as 50% off if you know where to go

Wed­nes­day of the month on ev­ery­thing you buy. If you’re al­ready a ClubCard mem­ber and over 60, simply switch to the ClubCard Se­niors pro­gramme and start earn­ing. Spec-Savers Pen­sion­ers aged 65 and up re­ceive a free se­lected frame worth R599 when pay­ing for an eye test and pre­scrip­tion lenses. Torga Op­ti­cal Pen­sioner deals are run daily. Check at your lo­cal branch. Weigh-Less Women over 60 and men over 65 pay less in sub­scrip­tion fees.


Mango Air­lines Se­nior cit­i­zens qual­ify for a 10% dis­count on se­lected flights on Tues­days, Wed­nes­days and Saturdays. They just have to pro­vide proof of iden­tity.

Grey­hound buses Over-60s get a 15% dis­count dur­ing off-peak pe­ri­ods, which is valid on pre­booked and standby tick­ets. The dis­count is avail­able only when book­ing at Grey­hound out­lets and

through the Grey­hound web­site and Grey­hound call cen­tre. You need a valid pen­sion­ers’ card or ID when book­ing and board­ing.

In­ter­cape Pas­sen­gers who are 60 and over score a 15% dis­count on all buses. You just have to present a valid ID.

In­ter­City Xpress Pen­sion­ers are given a 5% dis­count on tick­ets when they pro­duce ei­ther their pen­sioner’s card or ID when pay­ing.

Shosholoza Meyl Pen­sion­ers over 60 qual­ify for a 25% dis­count dur­ing off-peak pe­ri­ods. This of­fer is avail­able for tourist class only – not econ­omy – and an ID is re­quired when book­ing a ticket.

Tsogo Sun The ho­tel group of­fers a wide range of spe­cials and dis­counts for over-60s. You can save 50% off the best avail­able rate of the day, sub­ject to availabili­ty. SANParks South African Na­tional Parks of­fers up to 40% off var­i­ous rates. But th­ese don’t ap­ply on Fri­day and Satur­day nights or long week­ends. Proof of iden­tity is nec­es­sary.

AA The Au­to­mo­bile As­so­ci­a­tion 60+ Ad­van­tage road­side cover pro­vides over-60s with peace of mind for just R81 a month.


NuMetro The cin­ema chain of­fers a num­ber of dis­counts on movies, de­pend­ing on the type of movie you’re watch­ing – whether it’s 3D or 2D, for in­stance.

All dis­counts are ap­pli­ca­ble only when book­ing at a NuMetro counter and proof of iden­tity is re­quired. Go to your near­est cin­ema to find out more about spe­cific dis­counts.

Ster-Kinekor Se­niors who are SK Club mem­bers get a 22% dis­count on all ticket types except on Tues­days. You’ll also have access to ex­clu­sive club screen­ings and the VIP lounge.

The Barn­yard The­atre The chain of­fers over-60s a 50% dis­count on shows. This of­fer is valid on Sun­day af­ter­noons at Jo­han­nes­burg the­atres and on Wed­nes­days in Cape Town. Mon­tagu Dried Fruit and Nuts Se­lected stores of­fer be­tween five and 10% dis­counts to over-60s on spe­cific days.

Tiger Wheel & Tyre The com­pany of­fers dis­counts on tyres and other se­lected prod­ucts and ser­vices to cus­tomers over 60 ev­ery Tues­day.
