LOBOLA ISN’T OWNERSHIP
I was at the police station to certify some documents when I overheard a woman laying domestic violence charges.
She said, “My boyfriend is beating me up but he hasn’t paid lobola for me.”
She seemed to think it would have been fine for her to be subjected to abuse if lobola had been paid.
Does she think she’s an item that can be bought and used or abused? What happened to self-worth?
The kind of mentality that makes women think it’s okay to be disrespected and treated like trash by their husbands needs to be rooted out.
No man has a right to beat a woman, regardless of how much lobola has been paid. NELSON KHUMALO, TEMBISA
