Experience exponential gains through MASTERMIND GROUPS

- By George Mutendadzamera

Out of the world’s many economic tsunamis, including The Great Depression of 192939, The Opec Oil Price Shock of 1973, The Asian Crisis of 1997, and The Financial Crisis of 2007-8 have emerged success stories of businesses that withstood the turmoil to come out stronger than they were before. These economic crises wreaked havoc causing untold hardships and many bankruptcies globally. Whilst there are many diverse factors responsible for the survival of some of the businesses one possible factor is the use of Mastermind groups by players caught up in the crisis.

What are Mastermind Groups?

Let’s start with what they do. A mastermind group is designed to help you navigate through challenges, headwinds, problems and help you identify or take advantage of opportunities, using the collective intelligence of others.

Napoleon Hill in ‘Think and Grow Rich’ writes, “Economic advantages may be created by any person who surrounds himself with the advice, counsel, and personal cooperation of a group of men who are willing to lend him wholehearted aid in a spirit of perfect harmony” even as he pens, “It is a well-known fact that a group of electric batteries will provide more energy than a single battery. It is also a well-known fact that an individual battery will provide energy in proportion to the number and capacity of the cells it contains. The brain functions in a similar fashion. This accounts for the fact that some brains are more efficient than others and leads to this significant statement – a group of brains coordinated (or connected) in a spirit of harmony will provide more thought-energy than a single brain, just as a group of electric batteries will provide more energy than a single battery”.

Now, why is this important? We are currently amid one of the greatest financial and humanitarian tsunamis in the history of the world. The COVID19 inspired crisis is causing untold financial and humanitarian hardships across the world. Businesses are folding in their numbers for lack of finances and ideas.

As a businessperson, you may have tried everything, but not making any progress. Your business continues to suffer, and it may be on the brink of collapse. Something inside of you says, ‘Try harder’ and again ‘Try harder, still nothing. You are spending sleepless nights trying to figure something out. Maybe days, weeks, and months have gone by! You know you need an injection of fresh ideas, but cannot afford consulting fees.

Does this resonate with you? We have been programmed as part of our paradigm, part of our habitual behaviour, to take logical, progressive steps. So, every day you are trying to take one step at a time towards a solution to save your

business. But by bringing other brains to bear on your challenges you can achieve much more, much quicker.

Mastermind Groups are a group of people coming together where there is a common situation that they want to accomplish, a goal, a challenge that they want to overcome. The mastermind group is dedicated to helping you solve your problem.

By bringing together the combined power of two or more brains you experience an explosive jump in your performance that puts you far beyond the next logical step. You will experience exponential gains rather than incremental progress.

Mastermind Groups can bring about quantum leaps without apparent effort. These are high velocity moves that carry you to dramatically higher performance levels without a timeconsuming struggle. Why? Because each participant thinks about giving not getting. It is not about:

• I have all the answers

• I can’t be wrong

• I won’t say anything because others will think I don’t know enough

• Others will compete with me

When a group of individual brains coordinate and function in harmony, toward a definite objective, energy increases and, the energy becomes available to every individual brain in the group – that’s a Mastermind. And the group can achieve incredible wins.

Some of the benefits of mastermind groups are:

• New perspectives being brought to bear upon your challenges

• Brainstorming ideas in a safe space

• Feedback from group members who are rooting for you

• Support from a community that wants you to succeed

• Continuous networking. Mastermind Groups are an excellent way for individuals to get a sense of community and networking during entrepreneurship.

• Learning new things. Mastermind Groups are a great source of inspiration and education.

• Accountability – having accountability can help you reach your goals.

• Finding potential partners

• Being creative because you have an opportunity to escape from your own difficulties to creatively input into the challenges of a group member. This strengthens your creative ‘juices’ enabling you to move on to tackle your challenges.

• Share resources as a group

With the help of Napoleon Hill, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created one of the most successful mastermind groups in history. Its incredible successes are well documented including “breaking the back of the Great Depression in 1933”. CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, and Owen Barfield had a successful mastermind

group famously called The Inklings whose results included ‘The Lord of The Rings’, ‘The Hobbit’, ‘The Screwtape Letters’ and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. Benjamin Franklin had a weekly mastermind which resulted in the first US Library, volunteer fire departments, public hospitals, and police departments.

Whilst Mastermind Groups are usually associated with business, their usefulness extends far beyond the world of business into any area in pursuit of worthy goals.

How does it work?

No mastermind group is the same but some of the common features are, meeting regularly usually once a week but there are no prescribed frequencies, meetings can be in person or virtual, they follow a set agenda, usually meet for an hour (never allow the meeting to ramble on indefinitely), usually have a Chairperson, a note-taker, and a timekeeper.

Who should be in your Mastermind Group?

Be very selective about who you invite into your mastermind group. The people you share your dreams and thoughts with must be sufficiently trustworthy. You see, Masterminding requires an open mind, you release yourself to the Mastermind. The longer you work with it, the more powerful it becomes. You come into the group believing that the answer to your challenge or issue is there in that group. Each challenge becomes a learning opportunity and of course, everyone benefits.

What is the cost of joining a Mastermind group?

Usually, membership is free but there are also paid Mastermind Groups, usually associated with high achieving entrepreneurs, for closing deals or simply meeting like-minded people. Pricing can range from $500 up to $100,000. Mastermind groups are an excellent resource for

businesspersons to utilize as a tool to create new and significant ideas.

I recommend businesspeople take advantage of them particularly in these unprecedented times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. They offer a magnificent, costeffective, and versatile platform to share ideas, revive businesses, pivot businesses, and hey you never know what can come out of them! That is their beauty!

You can join an existing Mastermind Group or you can create your own. If you choose to start your group, reach out to your coach to help you to set it up including providing you with the Mastermind Principles and Guidelines.
