On the same evening of allure at Sun International’s venue, Sun Arena in Pretoria, Thulisa was crowned Miss World South Africa during the ceremony. The Mdantsane-born will be representing South Africa at the Miss World pageant later this year. With her absorbing personality, Keyi gives us a glimpse into her life and Miss SA journey.
BEHIND THE TITLE:
Thulisa Keyi is a final year Chartered Accountant trainee (graduated with Bcomm and Honours in accounting, both from the University of Cape Town) and has successfully completed her thirty-one months of training with one of the big four audit firms in the world. Coming from a devoted family and is one of the four children to her parents. When she was young, she used to do karate and can still count from 1 to 10 in Japanese. “I was a normal child, loved to play and being with my friends. My friends did karate and took me with to one of the classes so that’s how it came about, but I really enjoyed it,” she says. At 17, her father was murdered and Thulisa’s mother has been her pillar of strength since then. “It has made me stronger. My dreams keep me going and the possibility of achieving every single one of them energizes me,” she says. Thulisa loves reading, going to the gym and exploring new restaurants. Asked about what she is currently reading, Thulisa says; “I am currently reading the Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, but my favourite book is David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell.” Living her life like any other young woman, Keyi also loves spending time with her loved ones. With one of her favourite quotes from J.F. Kennedy: “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction,” Keyi tells Empowered Youth that the quote motivates her to follow her purpose.
EMBRACING HERSELF AND MISS SA PAGEANT:
Entering Miss South Africa 2018 with the hope to empower, it was her first time entering a beauty pageant, though she has been a professional model for a while. “I wanted to add Societal value and have a platform where I could inspire the youth and women and be a role model. I believed in myself, so that gave me courage to enter,” she says. From the first day of being part of the pageant, Thulisa keeps in her heart the highlight of cheering happy to see herself walking on that stage of glam. It was each and every contestant to walk away with a crown and Thulisa was one of the chosen winners. “Seeing my family on the side of the stage while walking down the stage, cheering and being absolutely happy to see me walk down that stage. That gave me so much joy,” she says. The evening was full of joy for both Thulisa and her family. “It was amazing and I am excited to represent South Africa at Miss World. My life changed as I have to incorporate Miss World responsibilities into my daily schedule while continuing to work. It is an experience of a lifetime very different from being an accountant, but I would not trade it for anything,” she adds. Thulisa will be representing South Africa at the Miss World pageant on the 8th of December in Sanya, China.
ADVICE FROM MISS WORLD SA:
Asked about any kind of pageant she would come up with, Thulisa tells Empowered Youth that it would be anything focusing on inner beauty. Her advice to the aspiring models and qualities one needs to be crowned Miss South Africa: Keep going, when things work out, you will be glad that you did not give up. Be yourself, and let the judges know who you are, what you would like to achieve and how you are best fitted for the role. But you have to be hardworking, genuine, inspirational and kind amongst other qualities.”
Thulisa Keyi is tremendously happy that she will be representing South Africa at the Miss World pageant in Sanya, China on the 8th of December 2018.
